C45 is a medium carbon steel grade known for its good strength, hardness, and machinability. It can be heat-treated (through hardening and tempering) to achieve higher mechanical properties. C45 offers an excellent balance between strength and toughness, making it suitable for general engineering applications.

Chemical Composition (Typical %):

• Carbon (C): 0.42 0.50%

• Manganese (Mn): 0.50 0.80%

• Silicon (Si): 0.10 0.40%

• Phosphorus (P): 0.040%

• Sulphur (S): 0.040%
  
  

Mechanical Properties (Approximate):

• Tensile Strength (normalized): 570 700 MPa

• Yield Strength: ~355 MPa

• Hardness (Annealed): 170 210 HB

• Hardness (Hardened & Tempered): up to 55 HRC

• Elongation: 16%
  
  

Heat Treatment:

• Normalizing: 840 880C

• Hardening: 820 860C (Oil or water quench)

• Tempering: 540 680C (to desired hardness)
  
  

Key Properties:

• Good machinability and workability

• Can be flame or induction hardened

• Moderate tensile strength with good impact resistance

• Readily weldable (with proper preheating)
